Thursday Thoughts

Question:  Have you ever fasted?  With what result?

Isaiah 58:1-9a
"Shout out like a trumpet"  -paraphrase
from the Living Bible:  Treat your workers well.  Much more immediate than "oppressed"
Helping others is what the Scripture calls for
          Difficulty of giving without strings
We, as human beings, want accountability.
Isaiah says:  "Do Justice" which implies our action, not theirs, is what matters.

1 Corinthians 2:1-12
"I decided to know nothing...except Jesus Christ, and him crucified."
We don't understand what God is doing (and we don't) that's where faith comes in.

Matthew 5:13-20
Salt of the World, Light of the World, not change the Law
Obvious connection to the Isaiah reading.
Better than the Pharisees--a huge burden!
     "Don't hide your light"
Larger question:  "What do we offer for meaningful volunteer work that appeals to a younger generation?  Rather than 'making' them get involved with something that doesn't appeal, what does appeal?"

Sermon Title:  Salt, Light, and Heat

Next Week:
     Deuteronomy 30:15-20
     1 Corinthians 3:1-9
     Matthew 5:21-37

Have a great week!  PD
