January 30, 2014 What Does It Mean to be Blessed?
Question of the Week: When have you felt so guilty you could not think of anything else?
Micah 6:1-8
Only reading of Micah in the three-year lectionary.
"Do Justice, love kindness, walk humbly with your God."
We are called to do these things.
Arises out of a time when everything is going well, so people have forgotten God.
Hebrew terms: mish'pat, hesed, halak
Common terms in OT, starting to use the Hebrew, because there is no equivalent.
hesed in particular, because it defines an unequal relationship of love, and it is the kind of relationship God has with us and we should have with others. Definite connections to the love of Christ expressed in the Cross.
I Corinthians 1:18-31
God chose foolishness to speak to us
Gospel is counter to our culture
God's foolishness is more powerful than our "wisdom".
Church is called to be a community that ignores the social boundaries of culture and wealth.
Dorothy called out a passage from last week: "let there be no divisions among you." Glad that the church has gotten rid of all arguments and divisions!!!!
Matthew 5:1-12
Beattitudes
Sermon on the Mount is always given to a group: "Y'all are blessed"
What does it mean to be blessed?
Part of the blessing comes through being a community.
Sense of a gift to and from and through the Church.
Challenge: What are you a blessing in the week ahead?
Sermon Title: What Does it Mean to be Blessed?
Next Week:
Isaiah 58:1-9
I Corinthians 2:1-12
Matthew 5:13-20
Have a great week!
